about

. While their earlier work was created by traditional jamming and writing during weekly rehearsal, this project was an experiment in remote collaboration by composing and communicating ideas directly within the digital audio workstation (DAW). For Microdreams in Hypersleep we embraced the Fun-A-Day challenge by recording one-minute songs entirely over file sharing. Each day of the month of January 2020, one of us would record one minute of music and upload the file to a shared folder. The other would listen through and add their own one minute of music over top of the original. We both soon found ways to give each other prompts or feedback on ideas through the DAW itself, which created a much different forms of inspiration, communication, and collaboration than heaving and shaping sounds together.

To minimize pressure and maximize experimentation, we agreed to focus 1-minute margin in to make “abbreviated soundscapes,” and create as much “effect by sound” as we could in each minute.

As the month progressed, the output varied wildly. Vivid or abstract. Pleasant or harsh. Rhythmic or droning. Organic or synthetic. Harmonious or atonal. Jarring or resolute...

We soon agreed that the (only) common aesthetic is how these consistently evocative-yet-ephemeral pieces felt like dreams, and we welcomed that guiding motif. Soon after, we realize that the number of pieces to create (30) would had an amusing coincidental match to the number of characters that are shown to sleep in the series of films from which we chose our to adopt “POWERLOADER” as our band name.

Our work resulted in 30 stereo tracks, each roughly one minute in length. Each is an attempt at sonic characterization of the various types of dreams experienced by each of the 30 characters shown to undergo hypersleep within the first four films in the Alien franchise.
